Armed with the Lonely Planet, some excellent maps and my trusty walking shoes, Mel and I headed out to soak up as much of the history and as many of the incredible sights as we could. These pictures give you a little glimpse into our time there - I will bombard you with stories when I get home, it's just too hard to explain on a blog!
That little construction they call the Colosseum :) Mel and I took a guided tour, which was brilliant! I learnt so much. Here's a fun fact: did you know they used to drink the blood of gladiators? Drinking the blood of strong men would make you stronger, so they believed.
A genuine, real, ancient gladiator.... Charging 10 euro for a photo... I did some sneaky camera work :)
Inside the Colosseum - here you can see the maze of corridors underneath the floor - where the animals were kept
Some of the marble decorations that the rich Romans had in their houses - this is worth millions in today's currency
An archaelogical site - in the train station no less - there are only two train lines in Rome. Every time they try to build a new line work is halted when another archaelogical site is found - train line constructors out, archaelogists in!
The catacombs
We saw this symbol all throughout the catacombs, one that is very familiar to us, especially as school teachers
The Vatican Museum entrance
Some amazing art work on a gallery ceiling. Every where you look in the Vatican there is something stunning to see!
Jealous! Rome is on the top of my list of places i definitely want to see! Love the photos too!
